Owning
and operating your own business are not without challenges, but for the person
behind Bakersfield neon LED signs, it's now starting to pay off.
After
a term with the United States Navy, Lance Hill settled in Bakersfield, and
began looking for work only to find nothing substantial. With a new family in
tow, he used his savings to start a mobile car wash business that segued into a
t-shirt screenshot he began in his garage.
Hill
said the business brought in a steady stream of income, but he said he felt a
different path to take. An avid reader, he picked books that he felt
would encourage him to utilize his mechanical and engineering side. What occurred
was that during a drive around Bakersfield, he noticed that signage for small
and medium sized businesses were being under-serviced and not up to date with
current technology.
Neon
lights in town were costing companies monies that he felt he could provide
better quality at a lower cost.
He
explained that neon light in the past years, and still used in some
applications, were vacuum glass tubes filled with gases, secured at each end
with metal caps and filaments. The problem with these lights, though effective was the way glass could be bent and used to create alluring designs and lettering,
had poor life spans. Glass was easy to break. With broken glass,
the light’s effectiveness was also diminished. This presented a problem for
the business owner as a decision had to be made to spend the cost for repair
and replacement.
Other
light technology opened up new light opportunities that provided great
options with design and effective LED displays. LED or light-emitting diodes are basically a
semiconductor devices that emit visible light when electrical current pass
through it. The advantages of LED are that it requires 1/10 the electricity and
it lasts longer, about 50,000 – 200,000 hours, against 1,000 hours for
conventional lighting. With this 80% to 90% reduced electrical costs and less
need for replacements, companies find themselves hard not to look at change.
LED lighting
had one weakness. It didn’t have the
luminosity feature neon was so famous for.
What a customer needed was a product that had the same saving features
as LED, the flexibility and effect of neon, and the strength of hard
rubber.
What Lance
found was a unique product called LED Flex Neon that answered all of his
questions.
It did not
take much time to introduce this technology.
After
5 years of crafting his trade, Lance, who recruited his wife, Shannon, to
assist him with the new demand, moved from their garage to their present
location at 9:09 Chester Avenue. Has business picked up, which he said at a
fever pitch, he recorded, don't be too much a, a lean Six Sigma is a business
coach, to develop processes that reduced waste and increased efficiency.
He
said the secret to his success was the combination of several factors. First, he
maintains a reputation of servicing businesses on a timely manner. Second, he
keeps up with recent technology and shares with his customers.
Since then, he's been able to service a long list of signage for gas stations, stores, wrap arounds and special projects.
